The article highlights the challenges faced by Chinese students due to an insufficient level of music-theoretical literacy and the negative impact this has on the development of their musical abilities – including tonal, harmonic, and polyphonic hearing. It also affects the formation of skills for differentiated analysis of vocal repertoire, understanding the role of instrumental accompaniment in shaping a cohesive artistic image, and the acquisition of skills necessary for solfeggio of new vocal works and their personal interpretation. The article characterizes the features of the Chinese methodology of general music education, which is based on the principles of the relative numerical notation system Jianpu. It is noted that, despite its effectiveness in teaching simple melodic singing, this system does not facilitate an understanding of the structural features of musical language or the nature of vocal works from the European tradition.Fundamental differences in the European music-theoretical system are examined – differences that Chinese students must internalize in order to be able to stylistically perceive and accurately reproduce the artistic and figurative meaning of musical works. The tasks that need to be solved for Chinese students to acquire proper musical literacy, and along with it – to master European vocal culture, are substantiated. It is emphasized that the acquisition of musical literacy by Chinese students – future teachers of musical art in the process of teaching singing – is a complex process, which is based on the relationship between auditory experience, performance and phonation skills, the acquisition of internal auditory representations and their generalization in musical-theoretical concepts.Awareness of the formed auditory representations will contribute to the ability of Chinese students to operate with them in various forms of musical activity: in adequate and value- based perception, competent reproduction of the musical text of vocal works of European vocal heritage and their artistic and meaningful performance.
